Pregnancy Today's Advisory Panel Answers:
How should I choose between the various labor anesthesia options?

Question

I'm eight weeks pregnant, and I know it's early, but how should I choose between the various labor anesthesia options?

Answer

Expectant mothers have many choices for managing the discomfort of labor and delivery. There is no right or wrong approach - every childbirth experience is different. Immediately following the knowledge of pregnancy, an expectant mother should start gathering the opinions of those they trust - obstetrician, spouse, significant others, friends and relatives. Then, she can take an informed approach to developing a plan to manage her labor and delivery in the manner in which she is most comfortable.

A woman will learn that three common categories exist for managing the discomfort of labor and delivery: psychologic anesthesia; intravenous medications; and regional nerve blocks. A patient may choose to use modalities from different categories at the same time or switch from one category to another during labor.

The health and happiness of both mother and baby are the common objectives for both the obstetrician and the anesthesiologist. Childbirth can be an enjoyable experience, especially when the mother is prepared. Follow my motto - informed patients make better health care decisions.
