Pregnancy Today's Advisory Panel Answers:
What are Bradley®classes like?

Question

What are Bradley® classes like?
Answer

Most teachers teach privately out of their homes. Classes usually meet weekly and last two hours. Each includes discussion, lecture, and instruction in a different relaxation technique. We also have labor rehearsals, videos, role plays and many a lively discussion.

The standard Bradley® course is 12 weeks long because it takes the average person 12 weeks to learn how to relax completely. Also, you want to choose a childbirth class that actually prepares you for the realities of labor, not one that simply shows you a film and gives you a talk that you'll forget when the first contraction hits. I teach in a variety of ways so that you will know how to handle labor when it comes and so your partner will be able to support you well.

Along the way we also cover the important topics of nutrition, exercise, pain relief, choices in maternity care, cesarean surgery, cesarean prevention, recovering from childbirth, breast-feeding, and new baby care. All of this takes time. Dad comes to class, too, as we want to equip the father-to-be in how he can effectively aid his partner. In fact, his role is so important that the Bradley Method® is also called "husband-coached childbirth."
