Answer
Don't we all wish there was a simple answer to this! Each woman's "return"
is as unique as her pregnancy. Here are some factors that may help you
understand what you can expect.
1. Look at your ratio of lean body composition, or muscle mass, rather
than your weight. Starting in our 30's we tend to lose 5 lbs. of muscle
and gain 10 lbs. of fat each decade. We also lose 1-2 lbs. of bone
density. Since muscle weighs more than fat, your body weight can
deceive you into thinking that you are "back to normal" when in fact
you are more fat than before. Or, conversely, some women who exercise
during pregnancy and strengthen muscles may find that they are heavier
but have less body fat. I say, throw the scale away and go by how your
clothes fit.
2. Breastfeeding often leads to initial weight loss, yet many women
cannot lose the last 5-15 pounds while breastfeeding because the body
utilizes fat to produce breast milk. Be patient. Breastfeeding offers
many benefits to mom and baby that far outweigh the extra pounds.
3. Genetics is probably the greatest factor that affects how quickly
one can wear pre-pregnancy clothes. (Have a look at your mom and any of
your sisters.)
4. Some women never recover the waistline completely. Some say their
hips widened. Your body may never be exactly the same. Why should it?
Look at the miraculous transformation it has accomplished! Appreciate
your womanly shape.
5. If your want to help things along, exercise will improve your mood,
self- esteem and gradually, your shape. I think each new mom should try
to walk outdoors with her baby each day. Fresh air and sunshine are
great. Moms also need a video for rainy days or days when baby is sick
and cannot go to the health club. I recommend the Yoga Rhythms
video. It is an aerobic and toning workout that hits the muscle groups
new moms are most concerned about. You can order it from College Video
at 1-800-433-6769.
