What can I do to make natural childbirth easier?

Question

I am seeing a Nurse-Midwife for prenatal care. My question is about natural childbirth. I am determined to have this baby naturally, I just think it is safer for me and the baby. But most people I have talked to say that I am crazy. Is there anything that I can do to make it easier?
Answer

Congratulations on your decision to seek care with a midwife. Make sure you mention all your concerns to her/him. Natural childbirth, while painful, can be the most rewarding experience a woman can have. It is important for you to seek out other women who have had natural childbirth - they can support you in your decision and give you lots of help and encouragement.

There are multiple books out in paperback: Mind Over Labor is one of the books that comes to mind. Also check your local telephone directory and look for anyone teaching Bradley Childbirth Classes. These classes offer some of the best information on natural childbirth. (See also Pregnancy Today's Bradley Educator's resource page here.)
