Expert Q&A

My toes and feet are purple. Should I be worried?

Many, but not all, pregnant women note dependent edema (swelling) in the in their feet and legs during the latter part of pregnancy. The enlarging uterus tends to occlude blood vessels in the pelvis and legs causing a pooling of blood in the lower extremities. When feet are swollen they often have a dusky (purple) color.

While edema can be normal in pregnancy it is also associated with a complication of pregnancy called pre-eclampsia. Also called pregnancy-induced hypertension, this may include high blood pressure, protein in the urine, restricted growth of the fetus and edema. Any swelling, especially in the hands and face, needs to be discussed with your health care provider.

Many women find that elevating their legs at work and home helps with this condition. Abdominal support belts (see prior column on this), support hose and comfortable shoes can help. Restricting salt is generally not necessary. The important thing to remember is that after delivery your body will excrete this fluid via the kidneys and you WILL have ankles again!
