Expert Q&A

Is it safe to use a tanning bed during pregnancy?

Pregnancy alters the hormone melanin and causes darkening of the skin. This is most noticable around the nipples, on the abdomen and sometimes on the face (the "mask of pregnancy"). Since some of this discoloration may be permanent, it is best to wear high level sun protection throughout pregnancy. While I am not aware of information on tanning beds being harmful to the fetus, exposure to ultraviolet rays does increase your risk of skin cancer.

I would recommend avoiding tanning beds. A good alternative for relaxation would be monthly massages by a therapist experienced in pregnancy massage. I encourage all pregnant women to treat themselves to this most wonderful stress reducer.
