Expert Q&A

I know the average weight gain during pregnancy is 25-35 pounds. How does this break down?

You are correct that the average weight gain recommended is 25-35 pounds, but remember that this general rule applies to women who are beginning pregnancy at their normal weight, not over- or underweight for height.

I usually counsel my clients to gain about a half pound per week in the first half of pregnancy (first 20 weeks = about 10 pounds) and to expect to gain about a pound per week in the second half (last 20 weeks = about 20 pounds). This comes out to about 30 pounds, right in the middle of our range of normal.

One should remember, however, that women who are over or under their desired weight may be asked to follow different guidelines. And don't forget the importance of what you are eating to gain that weight for baby! It is smart to discuss nutrition with your provider before you get pregnant and again during the first few visits.
