Pregnancy Today's Health Advisory Panel Answers:
How can I use reflexology during labor?

Question

I've heard that reflexology is effective in helping with easing discomfort during labor. I am due in about four weeks with my first child. I am very apprehensive about labor. Could you tell me which areas of the feet are the ones to massage during labor? Mary Pat - Chicago.

Answer

I have two suggestions for reflexology during labor. If your labor slows or seems to even stop, here is a technique that may help.

Have yourself in a semi-reclining position on your back, or sitting in a chair with your feet up. Have a loved one face your feet and take hold of toes 2 and 3 on both feet. Number 1 toe being the big toe, number 5 being the pinkie toe. With both feet, firmly squeeze and release, repeatedly at the same time. After a few minutes, you may feel a warmth running up your legs and to the crotch area. This is the sensation you are looking for to speed up labor. Once you feel this, have your loved one continue until you feel that you are in active labor again.

Another suggestion for relaxation during labor:

Being in the same position, have your loved one press with a thumb (firmly, however it might be tender) at about the center of your arches. This area is for the solar plexus. Just to the left and down slightly of the arch of your right foot, and just to the right and down slightly of your arch of your left foot is the diaphragm. Have these areas pressed and held at the same time, alternating with small circles or strumming across the areas. This reflexology area on your feet will help you breathe. Increased breathing ability enables you take fuller and longer breaths and this causes relaxation, especially during contractions.

Good luck!
