Question:

What are the options available for acne prone skin during pregnancy to avoid severe breakouts. - Heather

Answer:

Many times expecting mothers experience acne breakouts, and with you being prone, you might have a more severe case.

I want to provide you with a strict cleansing routine, since cleansing and maintaining an oil free skin is the best approach for avoiding acne. You will want to cleanse your face each morning and night, being careful not to over cleanse, as it might fool your skin into thinking it needs to produce more oil to make up for the loss. Your cleanser should be formulated for oily skin and apply to your face and neck with a hands or wash cloth. Then rinse with cool water, using your hands to apply the water. This will rinse off any remaining residue and help close the pores down.

You will then want to use an astringent which will remove any remaining oil and will also act as an antiseptic. The astringent should be applied with gentle upward strokes using a cotton pad or cotton ball. Follow this cleansing procedure with an oil free moisturizer applied lightly using your finger tips in an upward outward motion. Moisturizer is essential for a balanced skin care regime on all skin types, and if used consistently, will aid in controlling the aging process. If you are really determined to control this problem, you will have to use this procedure twice a day, every day.

You should also ask your health care provider to recommend a vitamin that would be useful in controlling the breakout.

A daily walk will elevate your circulation, reducing stress levels and ultimately assisting in a balanced, toned and healthy skin.
