What is the Katie Beckett Waiver ?

Question:
I'm expecting twins and was told to look into the Katie Beckett Waiver for financial help in case they're born early. What is that?
Answer:
Even with 14 years experience, readers come up with great questions that have to be researched. Congratulations for keeping me on my toes. I had never heard of the Katie Beckett Waiver, so the Pregnancy Today editors bailed me out with the following web sites:

http://bcn.boulder.co.us/human-social/aut/hfinan.htm#KATE
http://www.ga-ddcouncil.org/resources.htm

This waiver is part of the Medicaid program, and it relaxes the financial eligibility criteria for Medicaid to provide medical services for a child with a chronic disability while helping the family provide care for their child at home.

Medicaid is national in scope, but administered by each state, and therefore, the provisions vary widely. One thing is constant: it is for children from birth to age 18 who would be eligible for Social Security Income due to some serious medical condition, but whose parents make too much to meet the income requirements.

Your question indicated you were having twins (Congratulations!), but I could not find anything relating to eligibility for the waiver based solely on multiple births. You may want to use a search engine and do a search for multiple birth information–there are several sites with significant amounts of information on twins. One site with an excellent FAQ section is http://www.owc.net/~twins.

Good luck to you all!
