Our nursery has high ceilings. Any ideas for us?

Question:
Our nursery is quite large with extra high ceilings. We want to do something very custom and creative. Any ideas?
Answer:
Consider bringing the ceiling color down onto the walls to create the illusion of a lower ceiling, some architectural interest and a more cozy feeling. If the ceilings are 10' high, you could bring the ceiling color down onto the wall by 18" to 24". You might want to consider wallpapering the ceiling and the 18" to 24" of wall in a clouds pattern. Use a wooden trim strip around the perimeter of the room where the wall and ceiling "break" - the trim could be something raised and very decorative or plain and flat. Let the architectural style of your home and your creativity lead you in this decision.

Locate the largest, unobstructed wall and reserve it for a custom wall mural of your favorite nursery characters or any other theme of your choice. Commission a local custom artist to create the design and paint the mural. Wallpaper the other three walls in a bold, two color stripe wallpaper that works with the colors of the mural.

Provided the windows are on an opposite wall from the mural, repeat some of the characters from the mural around the trim of the windows - the characters might all be riding in the cars of a open train or holding a floral garland.

Pick up the colors from the mural to choose print fabrics (checks, plaids, florals whatever is your choice and style). Use the fabrics on upholstered furniture in the room, decorative window treatments, pillows, a rocking chair cushion, custom crib bumper pads, a quilt and any other items you need to finish the look.
