Are there ways to dress up basic maternity clothes, or dress them down if the function is casual?
by Patricia Martin Bunch President of Pitterpat Maternity Wear

Question:

I'd like some options on how to dress when I have to work all day and then attend functions after work. Are there ways to dress up basic maternity clothes, or dress them down if the function is casual?
Answer:

Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize! Basic maternity clothes can be dressed up or down just as you would non-maternity clothes. Think scarves/wraps, jewelry, handbags, shoes, and hair accessories. You may be wearing a simple cotton/spandex knit top and short skirt to work in black or grey one day. Your work atmosphere is casual so you have white sneakers on, or simple slides or loafers. You have a cocktail party after work and need to be a little dressier. First, put on a pair of black sheer tights; replace your shoes with a pump, or more formal shoe. Select simple jewelry -- pearls for instance. Be careful not to wear too much, it is only a cocktail party, so save the rhinestones and fancy pieces for evening. Use a black cape for your wrap, or even a big scarf thrown loosely around your neck. Don't carry your briefcase but instead a small, simple handbag that matches your shoes. If your hair is long enough to put up, you might consider doing this. An "updo" always dresses up a look. If you like hair accessories, something like the little butterfly clips which are popular now is another way to go. To dress down an outfit use the same concept. Go from pumps to flats or sneakers; wear your hair less formal, the loose tousled look. Carry a more casual bag like a knap-sack. For your outerwear choose a denim jacket or oversized casual shirt.
