by Patricia Martin Bunch President of Pitterpat Maternity Wear
Question: I was wondering if you could give some advice on what to wear for those who can't wear maternity yet nor can fit in their wardrobe. I'm 4'11'' expecting twins and trying to keep the pregnancy under wraps at the office for a little while longer. Pregnancy Today gave great advice on the topic this summer, and I'm just looking for the fall/winter version. The answer to your question is even easier for fall/winter than for summer. Before you go spending money on maternity clothes, take a close look in your own closet. You will surprise yourself with the number of options you already own. Many dresses, jackets, vests and some pants you have could work really well. Look for dresses with empire waistlines or loose fitting shifts, boxy, single-breasted jackets, long knit vests, and pants with draw string waists. Oversized blouses, shirts and sweaters you'll probably find not only in your closet, but also in your husband's as well. A crisp white cotton shirt with leggings or a short skirt can take you far. Paired with a blazer, you have the perfect work outfit, throw a sweater over your shoulders and go casual for the weekend. Non-maternity leggings will do fine for a while, but you will most likely want to invest in a pair of black maternity leggings and short basic skirt simply because they are more comfortable. These should take you through your entire pregnancy, and will work from the time you are a few weeks to full term.
