Care of the Soul Spa Getaways
Your back aches. Your feet and ankles are swollen. Your head is throbbing... and that's just on the outside. Inside, you feel like crying one moment and the next, you want to bite someone's head off. You're on an emotional roller coaster, but the ride never ends. You need a little care of the soul, and a spa getaway offers exactly that. And no one deserves a little pampering more than an expectant mother. We visited three Wisconsin spas - all in the name of research - and report our findings here.
The American Club
The American Club, located in Kohler, Wisconsin, may be the resort
that time forgot. As you pull up the circular driveway to the Tudor-style mansion, and then as the
well-appointed doorman opens your car door for you, you'll feel like visiting royalty. And it only gets
better. Built in 1918 to house immigrant employees of Kohler Co., a leader in the plumbing products
industry, the American Club offers six categories of guest rooms, all of which contain down comforters
and custom Kohler baths. But as cozy as it is, you won't want to spend all your time in your room.
There are nine restaurants, offering a variety of fare and ambiance. From country gourmet to Italian,
there's a taste to appease every craving. Many recreational activities are available at the American
Club's Sports Core facility and River Wildlife wilderness preserve. At Sports Core, you'll find tennis
and Nautilus training, among others, but you may want to stick with swimming in one of its two pools.
At River Wildlife, meander through the 500 acres, stroll along the banks of the Sheboygan River, and
keep on the lookout for pheasant and deer. But the cure for what ails the pregnant woman is found in
the Spa Salon. There you can indulge in a massage especially designed for you. The spa's massage
therapists use a pillow made just for working on pregnant women. It has a center cut out which
accommodates a large belly, making a "real" massage finally possible. Call 1-800-344-2838 for more
information.

The Abbey Resort and Fontana Spa On Lake Geneva in Fontana, Wisconsin, the rustic Abbey prides itself on the wealth of activities it offers to guests of all ages: swimming, boating, tennis, golf and skiing, to name a few. Surrounded by woodlands and peaceful hiking trails, the Abbey's three restaurants offer a variety of cuisine, including healthy spa entrees. But the Abbey's crown jewel is the Fontana Spa, an elegant escape in itself. At the spa, you can slip into a robe and lounge in the atrium by the pool all day, or choose from an array of individualized health and fitness programs and 33 different services to renew your body and refresh your spirit. One last thing: A pedicure is a must, especially in the last trimester when you can't reach your toes. Call 1-800-558-2405 for more information. |

The Grand Geneva Resort and Spa
When you park
your car in the Grand Geneva's parking lot, there is no need to
use it again until you check out. Located in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, this tranquil resort is set on
1,300 scenic acres and has its own airstrip, lake, ski hill and riding stables. In addition, there are
two PGA-caliber golf courses, indoor and outdoor pools, and miles of biking and walking trails. Three
restaurants offer Italian country, American grill and casual buffet dining styles, and live
entertainment abounds. For those of you with other children, Grand Geneva boasts the Grand Adventure
kids camp, with plenty of activities to keep youngsters occupied. The 355 guest rooms and suites come
equipped with VCRs (video rentals available), coffee makers, hair dryers and balconies overlooking the
lake. When you visit the spa, the first thing you'll notice in the beautiful wood locker room is the
sitting area -- equipped with refreshments and reading materials -- where you'll comfortably wait in
your robe for your service provider to meet you. Choosing from the delicious array of services will be
difficult, but a stress-relieving facial, with the lights dimmed and soft music playing, is a sure bet.
