A non-invasive test in which fetal movements are monitored and recorded, along with changes in fetal heart rate in response to his or her own
movements. You are generally asked to wear an external electronic fetal monitor, affixed with a large belt (the same device used to monitor contractions in the labor/delivery
room) The baby needs to be awake, and his or her heart rate is recorded on paper for about 20 minutes.
If you're overdue, you may be scheduled for a NST, and might need to have it repeated every day or every few days to confirm the baby is
well.
